January 2017 Playlist

3 January 2017

A new year, a new playlist.

We’re all excited to begin a new year (well, most of us, you know some countries celebrate their new year on different dates of the year. Weird and quite interesting, but I divagate) and with this new year come a lot of opportunities and resolutions.

It is indeed an exciting time of the year.

So let’s take that excitement that surely invades you these days and use it to open your mind to new musical experiences.

Here are my picks for the month.

Sigur Rós – Sæglópur

One of my favorite songs from Sigur Rós without a doubt. I always find myself coming back to this one whenever I get the itch to get a small dose of SR. The song is mostly in Icelandic, so chances are that you won’t understand a damn thing, but let the music engulf you and take you on a nice trip. If there’s any Icelandic reader out there please help me understand what the lyrics are about – learning Swedish helps me understand a bit of Icelandic, but nowhere near to make it intelligible to me.

Portishead – The Rip

The buildup in this song… oh man, the beautiful build up on this song. How the acoustic guitar, line by line, little by little, note by note evolves into a simple electronic beat. This is the type of little subtleties that make Portishead one of my favorites. I could easily play this one for hours straight. If you aren’t familiar with Portishead yet, I would probably suggest to start with one of their first two albums.. but don’t be dumb, after those first two go and get this one too!

Men Without Hats – Safety Dance

We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind ’cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance, well they’re no friends of mine… Brilliant, just brilliant!

Deafheaven – Dream House

What’s a good playlist without at least one monthly metal recommendation? Fear not ’cause I will never stop feeding you guys your monthly metal spoonful. This team going a bit more extreme, but beneath the apparent chaos lies something weirdly…eerily beautiful. I urge you not to stop the song after just a few seconds (many of you will immediately reach for the X at the corner – but don’t!). Give it time, listen carefully, open your mind and you can certainly find something of great beauty in this piece.

Porno For Pyros – Pets

I really wanted to share the official video rather than just a still image of the album cover. The video brings so many good memories of the time when I was very young in the mid 90s. But anyway, this is a super fun song to start the year with… who knows, maybe 2017 will be the year when the aliens finally make contact, conquer us and prove that we’ll make great pets indeed. Enjoy!
